Two bills were introduced in yesterday’s special legislative session on topics related to the exercise of Second Amendment freedoms. While the special session lasted only one day and these bills officially died on the calendar upon adjournment as expected, along with every other bill that wasn’t passed, they both serve as a starting place for discussions leading up to the 2025 Regular Session next January.
While neither bill was drafted by the team at the Kansas State Rifle Association itself, we did make a recommendation to the Senator requesting Senate Bill 7 to include a provision for FFLs to be allowed to perform fingerprinting services for concealed carry permits like many already do for NFA items, and we recommended that the Senator requesting Senate Bill 8 exempt safes, lock boxes, and similar safe storage tools from sales tax as part of our work to incentivize the safe storage of firearms when not in use. You can be sure we’ll remain intimately involved in conversations around both topics and look forward to continuing the fight to defend Second Amendment freedoms next year and for many sessions to come!
